Last Sunday, Peter came to Jesus with a number. “How many times should I forgive? Seven?”
Peter wanted to know how forgiveness worked. Where were the limits? How much was required? When had he done enough?
Jesus’ answer was essentially: Stop counting.
This Sunday, Jesus tells another story about people who are counting.
A landowner goes out early in the morning and hires workers for his vineyard. He returns at nine o’clock and hires more. Then again at noon. Again at three. And finally, at five o’clock, when there is hardly any working day left. At the end of the day, everyone receives the same wage.
And immediately somebody starts doing the math. I’m sure you can understand why.
If I worked twelve hours and you worked one, surely I should receive more. That is how wages work. It is how fairness works. Things are supposed to add up.
But Jesus begins the story with these words: “The kingdom of heaven is like…”
And apparently, the kingdom of heaven does not always behave according to our calculations.
Perhaps that is worth sitting with for a while.
Last Sunday, Peter wanted to calculate forgiveness. This Sunday, the workers want to calculate generosity. And in both stories, Jesus seems interested in something that cannot be contained by a ledger.
What happens when grace refuses to be measured?
What happens when somebody else receives goodness they did not earn?
What happens inside us when generosity seems unfair?
I will be away this Sunday, but Federated will welcome Will Fenton-Jones and musician Luke Wallace for a special morning of worship. Will will share the Gospel with us, and Luke will offer music and reflection as we listen together for the Word among us.
Read Before Sunday
Matthew 20:1–16
As you read, try not to rush to make the parable fair. Notice your own reaction to it. Where do you find yourself in the story? Whose complaint makes sense to you? And pay particular attention to the landowner’s final question.
Questions for Reflection
- What feels fair—or unfair—to you about this parable?
- Why do you think Jesus describes the kingdom of heaven with a story in which everyone receives the same wage?
- How do you respond when someone else receives generosity you do not think they have earned?
